Jody Hewgill Biography

Toronto based painter Jody Hewgill mines references to renaissance  and mid 18th century portrait artists, for conventional representation of beauty as part of her motif of juxtaposing fantasy and whimsy with an unsettling emotional undercurrent.  Her work is largely figurative, often with a focus on exploring themes of the heroine and female archetypes, but Hewgill also draws inspiration from her avid interest in flora and fauna and our fragile relationship with the natural world.

Her work in currently featured in Taschen's 100 illustrators.
