Hyakki Yagyo: Night Parade of 100 Demons

March 25, 2018

I created four paintings for a group show titled "Night Parade of 100 Demons", curated by Hitoshi Murakami and Andrew Foerster for Northern Contemporary Gallery. Each of the 25 artists were asked to create 4 pieces; their own interpretation of ghosts and demons from Hyakki Yagyo, the Japanese folklore. The parameters were to depict a white demon on a black background, all facing left, to be mounted in the gallery (and used for a large montage print) as a parade of 100 demons. I selected my 4 demons based on things I fear (I confess my fear of pigeons, but the cat is one of my dog Betty's fears). "Nekomata: twice the whiplashes",  "Kotengu (bird): the streaker", "Tako Nyūdō (Octopus Priest): thrives under the cloak of the Catholic church", "Jorōgumo (spider): dines on virile young men". All four paintings are Acrylic on gessoed birch panel, 12” x 12”

Today August 24th is Ukraine’s Independence Day 🇺🇦 but it also marks 6 months since Putin began his unprovoked war against Ukraine. It must be such a bittersweet day for Ukrainians who take pride in being resilient against the unrelenting attacks, yet are mourning the loss of friends & family, their homes, communities and livelyhoods 💔 I stand with Ukraine 🌻 #standwithukraine #supportukraine #stopputinswarinukraine

My portrait of fabulous Maggie Rogers for the Hot List 2022 🔥issue of @rollingstone magazine, for the upcoming release of her album “Surrender”. My conceptual approach is a visual response to the album title and lyrics. The word “surrender” has so many connotations. I liked the metaphor of surrendering to one’s desire, and to the chaos of a situation that’s out of your control. The mood I am aiming for is sultry. I gravitated towards her green boa accessory from her video “That’s Where I Am”. I liked the symbolism of something luxurious that covers, but that also represents an artificial embellishment. It’s also great juxtaposition to her natural beauty. The loopy patterns at top were inspired by listening to the sonic rhythms and beats in the songs. The colour palette reflects the album’s nod to a 1990’s musical vibe. Thank you a.d Toby Fox and c.d. Joe Hutchinson for the awesome assignment!!! It’s always a delight to work on these RS portraits especially when I’m a fan of the music💖 #maggierogers #portraitillustration #acrylicpainting #illustrationart
